5 Reasons to Smile at Work Today

An elderly patient asked me a question related to her lung disease and I answered looking at her chart in my laptop. “Now answer the same question again looking at me instead of the computer,” the feisty old lady demanded. I turned 180 degrees away from her and repeated my answer facing the wall! And the lady, her daughter, and I burst into a generous laughter. As a result of this interaction, we were able to address her medical problems more efficiently and effectively. And she has been my most pleasant patient ever since.

Studies have shown that a smile, even a forced one has a multitude of physiological and psychological benefits. Here are a few reasons to smile at work today.

1. You will keep your heart rate and your blood pressure lower at work, and it will let you sleep better at home. A study by Dr Tara Kraft from University of Kansas showed that the participants with a forced smile had lower heart rates than non-smiling participants during stress.

2. You will solve problems more creatively as your pleasant demeanor opens up more channels when trying to solve a problem. Smiling decreases the blood level of adrenaline (the “fight or flight” hormone) while increasing that of acetyl choline (the “collaborate and create” hormone.) So next time someone throws a tough challenge at work, smile and you shall feel those creative juices flowing.

3.You will improve your cash flow as positive emotions always result in positive cash flow. Even during the protracted period of negative cash flow, Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com never stopped smiling and never abandoned his optimism. If he can smile despite negative cash flow, we certainly can with our positive cash flow.

4. You will reduce errors, improve customer service, and increase productivity by spreading the epidemic of happiness within your team.

5. And the most important reason, you will look even more attractive!

Are you smiling yet?
